calling Hobo::Controller.app_name destroys AJAX request

If you call Hobo::Controller.app_name from within an ajax controller action, the Rails request object gets messed up causing an empty response to be returned. This is a problem because Hobo::Controller.app_name is called in our default mailer generator.
