disabled options in select-many don't work in IE6 or IE7

IE6 and IE7 don't support the disabled attribute on an option in a select, which we use in the select-many tag. The standard workaround is to use an optgroup instead. Instructions here: http://harrybailey.com/2008/11/disabling-select-options-in-internet.... The workaround for internet explorer breaks safari. So you add another workaround which breaks firefox. So you need a third workaround. Isn't this fun?
