Rails 3.2: Logging out stopped working because of unique and required validations

Logging out stopped working: the code handling ":unique" or ":required" in the model field lists has stopped working, so I have commented it and used standard Rails validations while I find time to dig a bit more.

It seems that the "validate" method is not accessible in the same way anymore.
